Festivals

Music festivals have always been popular with people of all ages. Whatever music you are into, there is usually a festival to suit going on somewhere in the world. Summer time is the most popular season of the year for hosting music events, this is mainly due to the fact that it is meant to be the driest season of the year. Although the Glastonbury festival is renowned for being muddy, most of the people who attend this festival take a pair of Wellingtons to wade through the mud. Glastonbury is known for being one of the biggest performing arts and music festivals in the world. Most big names at some point have performed at Glastonbury people such as T-Rex, David Bowie, New Order, Robbie Williams, Blur and Oasis are just a few of the bands who have performed over the years. The festival is not just about music though, featured in its diverse line up is dance, cabaret, circus, theatre and comedy.
Brighton in England hosts some of the most spectacular festivals, the summer festival here lasts for a whole week, and is hosted the week before the carnival parade which takes place on the first Saturday in August. The parade is situated next to Brighton pier, and thousands of people each year attend, both to join the parade and to spectate.
Most festivals over the years have taken place in fields up and down the country, in the 1960’s it was chilled and marked the hippy era, in the 1980’s it was more about the men in make up and the new romantic Britain. In the late 1980’s through to the early 1990’s the rave scene took Britain and Europe by storm. To the latter end of the 1990’s Brit pop was the craze with the battle of the bands Oasis and Blur.
Through to today, there are now all kinds of festivals going on through out the year, jazz festivals, music festivals and summer festivals. All of these will be well attended throughout the year.
If you are attending a festival, then expect the worst when it comes to the standard of accommodation. Usually the reveller will be expected to take their own tents, and queue for hours to use one of the nearest temporary toilets which are situated in sets at different points of the field. There are no showers, so roughing it is a requirement, and if you don’t mind doing that then ….enjoy.
